A ball mill uses the impact of ceramic or stainless steel balls, falling from near the top of a horizontal shell to crush the material into fine particle sizes. Ball milling is all about size reduction by using grinding media. In this case, the grinding media are ball, either ceramic or steel. The outer cylindrical shell rotates to lift the grinding balls to the top from where they fall; grinding and blending the materials at the same time. Ball mills are typically used in the ceramic, glass, paint, pyrotechnics, and porcelain industries and are also often used in food and chocolate production. By choosing the right combination of rotational speed, ball material, size, and weight it is possible to process a wide range of materials to produce ultra-fine products.
