The two main components of a shrink wrap packer are the cutting and continuous film system and the heat shrink oven. OCME has adopted a cutting system that guarantees high reliability over time thanks to the combined blade and counter-blade action. Depending on the primary product packages, food products like confectionery (biscuits and candies) that are packaged in a tray, can be a tight fit with secondary packaging. In this case, a solution that would be able to load the product horizontally (from the bottom of the packaging) and that pushes the product into a carton from the side, would be ideal. A horizontal cartoner is a great match for efficiently packaging food products such as flour mixes, frozen dumplings or snacks, where there’s not too much worry about breakage.

The Basis50 horizontal cartoning machine designed by Basis shapes cartons for secondary packaging of food products from pre-glued blanks. Blank cartons are loaded in the machine, after which the small flaps on the end of the carton are folded, followed by the bigger flaps. With the machine, the food products that might come in bags or trays or other primary packaging, are now automatically pushed in the cartons by pushers in continuous motion. After putting the product in the preformed cartons, necessary information is printed on the outer box flap, after which the packaging is sealed with hot melting glue. The machine works with a production speed of up to 50 cartons per minute.

Secondary packaging sizes are flexible in length, width and height. The machine can work with getting the supply from a conveyor system or a flow pack. Another option is getting the supply manually. Also, it is easy to change between the primary packaging solution, be it a thin plastic film or for example group stacking of bars. Then, there is the option for the Basis50 to work with various types of packs.

<h2>Top loading the product in the bag and sealing it shut</h2>
The Basis17, designed by Basis, is a fast model for packing bulk production a so called pillow bag, gusset bag or stabilo bag.  The machine reaches a speed of up to 120 packs per minute. A pillow bag is formed from a continuous roll of packaging film and guided over a forming tube. Seal bars bond the film on the two long sides of the bag after which the shorter bottom side is sealed by a separate seal bar. The product is then loaded into the bag through a forming tube and once the bag is filled, the top of the bag is sealed as well. The long film that forms several bags is now separated by a knife to form individual bags. After this stage, the end product is discharged from the machine.

The Basis17 gives the opportunity to pack the product in a wide range of packages, including pillow, gusset and stabilo bag. It can be integrated with weighters such as a volumetric rotary, a volumetric auger, a weight vibration (linear) or a combination (multi-head) of types. It is possible to pack products in the weight range from 25 gram to 1000 gram.

The blending process is critical to the flavor quality of tea. But the physical impact of the mixing mechanism on the tea leaves risks downgrading their aromatic profiles. Internal friction breaks the leaves and produces dust, causing the unwanted release of volatile compounds.


<h2>Protect the leaves during tea mixing</h2>
The gentle tea mixer machine from Lindor applies gentle blending to protect the leaves from breakage. The mixing drum is designed with non-movable blades that scoop up the tea leaves and let them flow under gravitational force.

The absence of paddles or ribbons found in conventional technology means that the delicate material is not subjected to collision with tooltips. This technique protects the integrity of the leaf size and shape, conserving its natural flavor.

Further aromatization is possible with an optional liquid injection system or by mixing in flavor granulates. Alternatively, the two methods can be combined.

From the rolling hills of Scotland to the tranquil gardens of Asia… What could a glass of whiskey and a cup of tea possibly have in common?

Single malt whiskey and single crop tea both rely on the uniqueness of their single ingredient - malted barley from a single distillery and tea leaves from a single plantation. However, when tea was introduced to Europe by means of traders, tea producers started to blend tea leaves from different plantations to suit the taste of Europeans.

When making blended tea, in addition to keeping the taste as consistent as possible in every batch, it's important not to break the tea leaves to avoid changes in color, flavor, taste, and the creation of tea dust.


<h2><em>“Keeping the integrity of the tea leaves is our mantra”</em></h2>
This is what Bastiaan Soeteman, Managing Director at Lindor, told us when we broached the topic of tea blending.

“<em>Tea blends can contain up to 35 different teas. Tea leaves can be very small, like powder, and very long, like pine needles – up to 2 – 3 cm</em>,” Bastiaan explains.

To balance out the characteristics of different teas, you can play with different factors, such as the rotation speed, the time, or the sequence in which the ingredients are put into the blender. For instance, some herbs and flower petals are added at the very last moment because they are very delicate.
<h2>Just like gravity pulling you down. There’s no force, it’s just a movement.</h2>
Everything in life is a metaphor, so Bastiaan gives us one.

“<em>When making a cake, you have to mix the ingredients in a bowl using a spoon and your arm’s power. After stirring for a while, the friction generated between the spoon and the mixture forces you to push harder and harder. This might damage the mixture.</em>”

The same happens during tea blending. Using a paddle or a ribbon mixer, the frictional force between the leaves and the paddle’s edge might break the leaves.

Lindor’s blender has no paddles or ribbons, which represent the <em>spoon</em> in Bastiaan’s metaphor. Instead of using a tool to mix the leaves, the whole drum is rotated – the <em>bowl</em> in the kitchen metaphor.

“<em>We use very little power... gravity is doing the rest. The only thing that we do is lift up some tea leaves and let them roll out of the scoops continuously. Our electric motor rotates the drum with 20% of the power of a traditional mixer</em>,” Bastiaan concludes.

In this way, the amount of tea dust created is negligible. Damaging the leaves means throwing away valuable raw material, which has undergone so many processes before arriving in Europe.
