Glycerine is a water-soluble liquid mix of alcohol and sugar. It is a by-product of the oil and fats industry that offers added value to various industries. There are three ways to process it: transesterification, saponification, and fat splitting (hydrolysis). In 2020 these 3 forms of glycerine production reached around 4 million metric tons, with a global market of $1.68 billion.

The waste oils from cooking in your kitchen could be transformed to biodiesel. Oily biomass such as soybean, animal fats, or recycled grease make excellent feedstocks to produce high quality alternative transport fuel. Materials are combined with an alcohol in a transesterification reactor that converts the mass into crude biodiesel. The finished product is a low-sulfur, biodegradable fuel that can be used in its pure formulation or in petroleum diesel fuel blends.

Systems for the filtration of liquids with suspended solid contents can be challenging with corrosion issues and cold spots. Sulphurnet’s Horizontal plate filter is configured for both continuous and batch wise filtration without leaving any solid residue. It is equipped with a scavenger plate which refilters the residue left in the tank at the end of a batch. It also allows complete product recovery by washing or drying the cake.

The Industrial Liquid filtration system is configured with horizontally positioned filter plates with holes. These plates are positioned uniformly in a vertical tank. The plates have varying depths depending on the filtration surface and cake volumes. The fluid to be filtered passes over these horizontal filter plates which can be fitted with different kinds of filter media. The solid particles then collect in the form of a filter cake, which then remains on the filter medium and the polished liquid flows through the filter plates to the filtrate outlet.

A good filtration system begins with high quality filter leaves. <h2>Save operational costs with a high-performance leaf filtration system</h2>
Sulphurnet’s DEFS Pressure Leaf Filter consists of three to five layers of wire mesh, mounted on a common manifold pipe. The mesh screen has fine holes to retain the solid particles while letting the liquid through. The solid particles layer on the screen and coat it which then thickens into an intertwined filter cake. Forming a wet or dry cake by first precoating the screen ensures the removal of very fine particles. Its inner layer is made up of a rough mesh for the discharge of the filtrate to support the outer layers. The final filter mesh is mounted on top of these layers. It thus ensures full flow with minimum restriction.

The industrial leaf filter for chemicals has a durable and completely enclosed configuration. It is easy to automate and ensures clean operation, prevention of leaks, corrosion and operating difficulties. It provides a large filtration area for a relatively small vessel with quality filter leaves. <h2>Making biodiesel from vegetable oil or animal fat</h2>
The biofuel production plant designed by Andreotti Impianti is a multi-feedstock plant that produces biodiesel. In order to produce biodiesel the plant has a multistep process: an oil drying section, a reaction section, a settling and evaporation section, a washing and drying section and a glycerine treatment section. Before the actual process begins, impurities are removed from the feedstock through a refining process.

The core step behind biodiesel production is a chemical reaction known as transesterification, a process involving three basic ingredients: oil or fat, an alcohol, and a catalyst that increases the reaction speed throughout the process. During the transesterification reaction, the selected feedstock is blended with methyl alcohol in the presence of an alkaline catalyst which creates two products: methyl esters, chemical name for biodiesel, and glycerine. Transesterification reaction takes place in specially designed reactors and in the subsequent settling the glycerin is removed as soon as it forms. Once the glycerin has been separated, a centrifugal separator washes and dries the biodiesel. The separated glycerin can be used to produce a variety of pharmaceutical products.

The essential objectives of containment systems are personnel protection and preventing the release of toxic or infectious material into the environment. Containment is also used to prevent a product or sample from contamination by the external environment. Glycerol or glycerin is the major by-product generated in the biodiesel production process. But the disposal of glycerin or various other by-products coming from biodiesel production process pose a big challenge to industrial plants, as they can’t be disposed into the environment.


<h2>Distilling and refining glycerin while minimizing the environmental impact</h2>
Glycerin production plant designed by Andreotti Impianti produces technical and pharmaceutical glycerin from a wide range of natural feedstocks. Glycerin can be produced from different by-products coming from three industrial processes: methylesters production, fats saponification and fat splitting. The production steps change depending on the starting by-product.

For by-products such as sweet water (splitting) and spent lyes (saponification), the process path involves chemical treatment, concentration and glycerin distillation and refining. Hydrochloric acid is added in the treatment unit to reduce the solubility of fatty acids, which are then separated. Before moving on distillation process, only one filtration is carried out for sweet water, while for spent lyes, filtration is done twice, before and after the neutralization. Crude glycerin is further processed in the distillation, deodorizing and bleaching plant. The distillation system is composed of several steps: washing, rectification, condensation. In the last purification step, blenching section uses activated carbon to remove color and odor in order to obtain a pure glycerin.

It is worth mentioning that crude glycerin coming from biodiesel (methylesters) production can be sent directly to the distillation process without any further treatments, thus avoiding dilution, purification, and concentration steps.

Since one of the biggest problems caused by industrial plants today is the disposal of by-products, Andreotti Impianti has included in its plants stripping units, which help minimize the environmental impact.

The main problems arising from refining process of vegetable oil and animal fats are energy consumption and wastewater production. Energy is used to heat water and produce steam, with temperatures reaching very high levels. Instead, wastewater generated during refining stages contains organic and inorganic contents, lipids, and high chemical oxygen demand, so when released in the environment can cause water pollution.


<h2>Refining crude oil while reducing wastewater and the use of chemicals</h2>
Andreotti Impianti refining plants produce oil for technical and edible use starting from all types of vegetable oils and animal fats.

Depending on the customer needs, crude oil can be neutralized in the chemical refining process or degummed in the physical refining process in the first step. Centrifugal separators are then used to separate the soaps/gums from the oil. According to the nature of the crude oil, certain technologies can be selected; for example, cold refining technology is used only in the sunflower oil or corn oil production process, which reduces the wax content.

The bleaching process removes pigments and impurities from degummed/neutralized oil using bleaching earths to absorb the pigment in the oil. In this way, the color of the oil becomes lighter. The winterization plant is used when sunflower oil and corn oil are processed. The purpose of winterization is to remove all waxes from the bleached oil. During deodorization, residual fatty acids in the oil and unwanted odors and flavors are removed by steam distillation under vacuum.

The use of vacuum groups with surface condensation leads to a zero-water consumption by reducing the amount of wastewater by 50%. Thanks to specific heat exchangers, heat recovery can be up to ≥ 80%, thus reducing energy consumption.

It may also be used to sterilize the product, equipment, tools, floor or work surfaces and to purify or clean the product by removing impurities. Extracting sunflower oil using an organic solvent, usually hexane, has a big environmental impact. In fact, hexane emissions are a major cause of photochemical smog.


<h2>Extracting oil while keeping hexane content to a minimum level</h2>
Andreotti Impianti extraction plant is designed for oil solvent extraction starting from oil seeds flakes or pre-pressed cake. This environmental-friendly extraction system reduce the hexane content in the air emission, where the air is washed with mineral oil and the hexane is absorbed. Absorbed hexane is evaporated and recycled.

The extraction process involves four steps: solvent extraction, separation of the oil-solvent miscella, recovery of the solvent from the meal and adsorption of carbureted airs. In the pre-treatment step, the seed is prepared for oil removal (<a href="https://making.com/equipment/lab-scale-seeds-brushing-machine/">brushing</a>, cleaning, de-hulling, cracking, cooking, flaking, and pressing). Then, the seed is fed into the extractor and placed on a filtering belt where the solvent, hexane, washes the seed cake. The solvent extraction process gives two products - oil-solvent miscella and meal wetted solvent.

The oil-solvent miscella goes straight to the distillation section where the hexane is distilled under vacuum and removed with live steam. The meal with solvent leaves the extractor for the upper layer of the toaster where all the hexane is distilled through a combination of indirect stream and live stream while stirring the product inside the toaster. At the bottom of the machine, the meal can be dried or cooled according to market requirements.

Only about 6% of the soy produced globally is directly consumed by humans, typically as edamame beans, tofu, or soy milk.  More than three-fourths of global soy production goes to animal feed. The rest is processed by soybean meal technology into oils or used for biofuels and other industrial processes.

When producing customized flakes, pressed cakes, or other oilseed products, the oilseed preparation value chain differs from one seed to the other. For example, soybean treatment asks for different processing compared to a sunflower seed or rapeseed.


<h2>Cleaning and dehulling seed for further processing in extraction plants</h2>
An oilseed preparation plant by Andreotti Impianti has a specific sequence of activities that meets the specific business needs of the following process plants of, for example, biofuel production. First, depending on the type of seed processed, the preparation plant handles the weighing of the seeds to stabilize the flow at the plant's inlet. The process then continues with removing any coarse particles from the raw material, and further cleaning consists of destoning where stones and other impurities are removed. After this, the material is then conditioned to reduce the viscosity and adjust the moisture content to desired levels. The oilseeds now need to be further reduced in size, which happens by cracking them. Finally, the seeds are dehulled to modify the final meal protein content, leaving a material with a higher protein density.

Take, for example, sunflower seed processing. The dehulling directly impacts the protein levels of the end product for this type of seed. Therefore, there is the option for one-stage or two-stage dehulling, meaning that for the one-stage dehulling, the product contains less than 16 percent residual hulling fragments. The dehulling process can reduce this percentage to 11 percent with a second round, which will lead to an even higher protein level in the dehulled product.

The main goal of the preparation plant is to have the raw material, the seeds ready and modified for further processing by solvent extraction or mechanical pressing. After dehulling, as mentioned above, seeds can be flaked to improve extraction performance for solvent extraction in an extraction plant. In addition, sunflower seed and rapeseed need to be pressed to improve extraction performance. Other process steps in the preparation plant might include milling to homogenize the size of the meal and pelleting for the logistics of the final product.

Continuous milling is a flow production method used to grind materials without interruption. It is often used in the production of foods, cosmetics, pharmaceuticals, chemicals, and minerals. The material to be processed flows in at one end and the milled output flows out at the other in a continuous process. A pellet mill is a type of mill used to make small, round, compressed, pellets from powdered materials. <h2>Small scale thermal separation with wiped film distillation</h2>
With wiped film distillation, a substantial decrease of boiling temperature is obtained by reducing the operating pressure. It is a continuous process with very short residence time. The VTA wiped film distillation laboratory unit is designed to distill small product quantities for acquiring reliable data of the separation process.

The unit can handle high-boiling and highly viscous feed with maximum viscosity of 15,000 mPas (cP). The fabrication of the unit’s main components using Borosilicate glass enables observation of the product properties for foaming or potential fouling during distillation.

It is suitable for feasibility studies, doing first process development steps, producing small sample amounts of final product and optimizing existing processes like separation, drying, concentration, fractionation and purification.
