<h2>A fabric belt dryer for Biomass</h2>
Amandus Kahl’s Fabric belt dryers use a closely knit plastic fabric belt to both transport a layer of product and allow hot air to pass through it for drying. The fabric belt also acts as an exhaust air filter to ensure limited dust loading as dust particles are trapped in the belt as the air is drawn through it. The dryers are particularly efficient, requiring inlet air temperatures of less than 120 C making them particularly well suited to make use of waste heat from other processes. The dryers operate automatically and relevant process parameters are monitored to ensure optimum and efficient drying.  To ensure a consistent and uniform final moisture content of the dried product even as the input raw materials vary in distribution of moisture content, a product supply system is included which evenly distributes material across the belt and turns it over during the drying process.

Amandus Kahl produces pelletizing presses with proven success for many types of biomass including wood, straw, dried forage, and agricultural byproducts among many others. The presses use pan grinder rollers to compact the biomass and force it through a flat pelletizing die forming continuous strands of compacted product. The strands are then cut to the desired length using rotating knives. The pan grinder rollers and knives rotate slowly ensuring optimum pellet quality and minimized generation of noise and heat.

The grinder roller gap and strand cutter are adjustable for optimized pellet quality for the customer’s particular needs.  The presses are designed for maximized plant up-time and include reinforced press chamber, die supports and cutting knives, oversized and permanently lubricated roller bearings, and active gearbox lubrication. The flat die design ensures even distribution of feed material and optimized pressure in a more compact package than traditional ring die type presses. The entire system is specifically designed for the required product specifications. The conditioner helps the products achieve the optimum amount of moisture before feeding them to the pelletizer. The moisture content of raw materials can be controlled through a conditioning system in which the product moves inside a chamber while steam is also injected.

The pelletizer can be equipped with 2 or 3 rollers and multiple knives to cut the extruded products from the die into the necessary pellet size. The pellets then go to the cooler to prevent them from sticking to each other before storing them for at least one day in the silos. Wood processing industries in Europe and the United States generate a combined 150 million tons of residues every year. But its dusty characteristics make this material difficult to handle and it is often just disposed of as waste.

<strong>But wood pellets are not simply compacted sawdust</strong>

In Europe, where an energy scare looms, consumers are stocking wood pellets for home heating systems. Unsurprisingly though, domestic-use pellets must meet strict certification requirements, explains Timo Müller, Marketing Manager at Salmatec.

“Unlike other pellet products, sizing is crucial here,” Timo tells us. “Wood pellets must adhere to a standard between 3.15 mm and 40.0 mm.” Pelletizers engineered for this type of pellets have special knifing technology that cuts pieces with millimetric precision.

Moisture control presents another critical challenge. The ideal water content in wood pellets hovers between 7%-9%. Moisture holds the milled dust particles together, but the pellets must be dry enough to burn efficiently and prevent mold growth. On the other hand, insufficient moisture makes them flaky.

The pre-pelletizing drying stage typically lowers water content to around 10% before a small amount of water is added again during the conditioning process. This moisture creates a homogeneous input material. But a conditioner does more than that, clarifies Timo: “It distributes particles evenly to enable a smooth production process.”

Producing wood pellets for domestic use is an intricate process. But it turns sawmill residues into a circular byproduct with a new purpose.
