Wood pellets drying Equipment

Industrial drying machines are designed to remove moisture from your product. But the drying process must cater to variations in the state of matter and molecular structure of the input material. Industrial dryer technology exploits the modes of heat transfer (convection, conduction, radiation, evaporative cooling) to control the moisture content.

Drying

Building a fire with wood sticks and logs is one of the most wholesome experiences. But it would take a lot of trees to heat up our homes. Instead, the fire-stoking power of plant material can be concentrated in a wood pellet, boosting its burning efficiency. <h2>A fabric belt dryer for Biomass</h2>
Amandus Kahl’s Fabric belt dryers use a closely knit plastic fabric belt to both transport a layer of product and allow hot air to pass through it for drying. The fabric belt also acts as an exhaust air filter to ensure limited dust loading as dust particles are trapped in the belt as the air is drawn through it. The dryers are particularly efficient, requiring inlet air temperatures of less than 120 C making them particularly well suited to make use of waste heat from other processes. Continuous dryer machine

Traditional dryers and heat transfer systems, like belt-, drum- or bed dryers are versatile solutions used in various applications, from sawdust to sludge. One of their main advantages is the low initial investment cost. On the other hand, however, traditional drying technologies, such as hot air drying, are high maintenance, energy–intensive, and relatively slow processes that require a lot of additional expensive equipment, like air treatment or firefighting.


<h3>Reduce drying time and energy consumption with superheated steam drying</h3>
The ExergyPSSD® uses superheated steam as the drying and conveying medium in a fully closed-loop process that operates under pressure. Treated with superheated steam in a low-pressure environment, the wet product is quickly dried off.

The superheated steam serves as a transport gas and drying media and vaporizes the moisture in the product in only 15 seconds. This essentially means that the moisture is efficiently evaporated using steam.  The dried product and superheated steam are separated in a cyclone and the steam is recirculated and reheated. Wood processing industries in Europe and the United States generate a combined 150 million tons of residues every year. But its dusty characteristics make this material difficult to handle and it is often just disposed of as waste.

<strong>But wood pellets are not simply compacted sawdust</strong>

In Europe, where an energy scare looms, consumers are stocking wood pellets for home heating systems. Unsurprisingly though, domestic-use pellets must meet strict certification requirements, explains Timo Müller, Marketing Manager at Salmatec.

“Unlike other pellet products, sizing is crucial here,” Timo tells us. “Wood pellets must adhere to a standard between 3.15 mm and 40.0 mm.” Pelletizers engineered for this type of pellets have special knifing technology that cuts pieces with millimetric precision.

Moisture control presents another critical challenge. The ideal water content in wood pellets hovers between 7%-9%. Moisture holds the milled dust particles together, but the pellets must be dry enough to burn efficiently and prevent mold growth. On the other hand, insufficient moisture makes them flaky.

The pre-pelletizing drying stage typically lowers water content to around 10% before a small amount of water is added again during the conditioning process. This moisture creates a homogeneous input material. But a conditioner does more than that, clarifies Timo: “It distributes particles evenly to enable a smooth production process.”

Producing wood pellets for domestic use is an intricate process. But it turns sawmill residues into a circular byproduct with a new purpose.
