The production of “essential oils” has traditionally involved using heat and distillation to extract volatiles. However, many of the key volatiles are sensitive to heat and/or pressure, and their essence is lost using traditional techniques. A new solution that uses harmless refrigerant gas can extract the finest oils from even the most delicate flowers to enhance product quality and potency.

The FC Extractor from Timatic uses the properties of HFC 134 to extract all the natural oils and volatile compounds of low molecular weight. No pre-treatment is required, and extraction can occur from any biomass, whether fresh or dried, including flowers, leaves, seeds, bark, roots, and more.

The fully automatic extraction process takes place in anaerobic conditions, preventing any oxidation, and using carefully controlled temperatures and pressures. The gas used in the process is filtered continuously, and when the extraction is complete, it is automatically recovered so it can be reused for subsequent batches.

Because the plant material is never heated beyond room temperature, even the most volatile flavour and aroma components are conserved. This produces oils of a much higher quality than traditional “essential oil” extraction techniques.

The all-stainless 316 construction of the Rapid Extractor means it is suitable for use with a wide range of solvents including alcohol, water, glycol, glycerin, and olive oil.

<h2>Concentrating products with steam and rotation, under vacuum</h2>
The Evapor by Okawara is a single effect, thin-film centrifugal evaporator that works under vacuum. For the concentration of heat sensitive products, viscous products, products that tend to foam and other high value products, this equipment is a good fit. The system consists of a hollow disc cone, rotating on a horizontal cantilevered shaft, using steam as a heating medium. The material that needs to be concentrated is pumped into the machine with a feed tube to have it transported to the bottom of the rotating spinning cone. Centrifugal force spreads the liquid over the heating surface in a thin layer of less than 0,1 millimeter. It passes across the heating surface in less than one second. The material like a fruit juice, dairy or other cosmetic, pharma or chemical products, is heated to the boiling point. This is controlled by the vacuum in the system. The concentrated material is then collected on the outskirts of the spinning cone by a paring tube. The product vapor will flow to a condenser where it will condensate and discharged by a pump.

The machine has a comparatively small heat transfer surface in relation to its heat transfer capacity. This results in a compact design that still has the capability to evaporate more water per unit area and doing so in less time than a more traditional evaporator. Additionally, the application of centrifugal force also helps to minimize generation of foam in a more effective way than falling film or scraped film evaporators. The evaporation temperature is between 35 to 90 C. Operating pressure is between 5,5 to 78 kPa/ 0.055 to 0.78 bar. The heating temperature can be between 60 to 100 C. Evaporation capacity is between 30 to 1,200 kilos per hour.

Horizontal thin film evaporators can increase the residence time of the product and achieve high evaporation rate and high percent distillate splits.


<h2>Horizontal evaporation without losing film integrity</h2>
The VTA horizontal thin film evaporator allows you to vary the required residence time within wide ranges. The product is distributed at the heated evaporator wall by the rotor so that a turbulent circular ring forms at the whole evaporator surface. Loss of film integrity is not possible therefore very high evaporation rates and very high percent distillate splits can be achieved.

It can also be used to carry out continuous reactions and reactive distillation in the thin and turbulent film at vacuum conditions by increasing the product residence time.
