The rapeseed flower evolved high concentrations of substances that are anti-nutritive at best and toxic at worst. But new varieties developed in the 1970s lowered the content of glucosinolates and erucic acids. From then, the use of oilseed rape spread to several applications, from edible oil to biofuel to animal feed. Rapeseed oil processing technology has thus become foundational to industries spanning food production, energy, cosmetics, and pharmaceuticals.

Pilot extraction plant for natural ingredients

Soybean oilseeds are usually processed through extraction methods using hexane or other solvents to produce soybean oil. To ensure the quality of soybean oil and meal, chemical solvents need to be separated and removed. However, organically grown soybeans need to avoid using oil extraction solvents to produce ecological products. You thus need a mechanical system of pressing and extrusion to maximize oil yield and improve the quality of press cake.


<h2>Hexane-free pressing and extrusion solution for high-quality oil and feed production</h2>
Farmet’s soybean pressing plant combines mechanical and thermal processing to help you obtain maximum oil yield. It provides you with a combination of extrusion and subsequent oil pressing, which enables you to yield high quality press cake and oil. This is achieved by heating of the grinded seeds during extrusion, which makes pressing easy and also leads to minimal leftover fat.

Once the seed enters the plant, it is cleaned and destoned in the seed pre-treatment unit before being ready to be crushed and extruded. Farmet’s soybean extruder contributes to reducing the amount of anti-nutritional substances and increasing bypass protein during soybean meal production. Subsequently, the extruded soybean seeds enter Farmet’s expeller oil press. The organic soybean oil pressing plant has a capacity ranging from 6 to 600 tons of seeds per day.

Extracting sunflower oil using an organic solvent, usually hexane, has a big environmental impact. In fact, hexane emissions are a major cause of photochemical smog.


<h2>Extracting oil while keeping hexane content to a minimum level</h2>
Andreotti Impianti extraction plant is designed for oil solvent extraction starting from oil seeds flakes or pre-pressed cake. This environmental-friendly extraction system reduce the hexane content in the air emission, where the air is washed with mineral oil and the hexane is absorbed. Absorbed hexane is evaporated and recycled.

The extraction process involves four steps: solvent extraction, separation of the oil-solvent miscella, recovery of the solvent from the meal and adsorption of carbureted airs. In the pre-treatment step, the seed is prepared for oil removal (<a href="https://making.com/equipment/lab-scale-seeds-brushing-machine/">brushing</a>, cleaning, de-hulling, cracking, cooking, flaking, and pressing). Then, the seed is fed into the extractor and placed on a filtering belt where the solvent, hexane, washes the seed cake. The solvent extraction process gives two products - oil-solvent miscella and meal wetted solvent.

The oil-solvent miscella goes straight to the distillation section where the hexane is distilled under vacuum and removed with live steam. The meal with solvent leaves the extractor for the upper layer of the toaster where all the hexane is distilled through a combination of indirect stream and live stream while stirring the product inside the toaster. At the bottom of the machine, the meal can be dried or cooled according to market requirements.

For processing facilities dealing with large volumes of vegetable proteins, wood chips, and other well-draining materials, achieving efficient extraction while managing solvent use is critical. Inefficient extraction processes can lead to higher costs, increased energy use, and inconsistent product quality.
<h2>Optimize extraction using continuous-loop, shallow-bed system.</h2>
The Model III Extractor by Crown Iron Works is a continuous-loop, counter-current, shallow-bed extractor designed to handle high volumes of products like vegetable proteins, wood chips, and citrus fibers. This system uses a solvent to dissolve oils or other extracts from the prepared material. Its continuous-loop design promotes excellent solvent contact, percolation, and rapid drainage, enabling complete extraction from diverse materials. The unique shallow, wide, and long flake bed ensures efficient solvent use and reduced energy consumption. Additionally, the extractor boasts features like self-cleaning drainage screens and an improved underscreen wash to maintain operational efficiency. High-volume oilseed extraction system

The quality of field crops (ROW crops) is determined by their seeds. The breeding and foundational phases are critical for viable lots, but accuracy comes at the expense of time efficiency. The multi-stage process raises the risks of contamination and leads to seed wastage.

Seed Processing Holland developed specialized Automated Processing Lines (APL) for field crops (ROW crops) that maintain quality and turnout. The closed system takes the seeds from threshing/shelling through cleaning and treating.

Designed for specific crops, the technology handles most crops, including sugar beet, corn (maize), and oil rape seed. The hardware is built to accommodate the particular dimensions and structure of lots, ensuring their proper treatment throughout the line.

Besides the integrated machines, the APL is powered by SPH Connect®, simplifying complex processes into pre-programmed recipes. Thanks to combined equipment and process data, growers and seed producers can set their quality parameters and adhere to them lot after lot.

The automatic internal cleaning feature provides a contamination-free CIP solution. Moreover, the units are purposefully designed to facilitate flow and prevent seed contamination by avoiding seed mixing between lots.

Automatic processing line for field crop seeds

Seed coating, also known as seed dressing, refers to the covering of seeds with external fluids, biologicals, chemicals, dry powder and solutions to protect the seeds, enhance germination and improve immunity. A common challenge for this process is that these materials may spill. Thus, in order to optimize the treatment process, it is essential to use equipment such as a seed coating machine that will reduce the workers' exposure.

Designed by Seed Processing Holland , the RDC’s (800 – 500 and 300) are advanced high speed seed film coaters with an integrated dryer. It simultaneously coats and dries agricultural and vegetable seeds, applying a higher percentage of liquid to allow direct packaging of the seeds once the process is completed. Furthermore, this seed coating machine uses a high-grade film coating formula and pays special attention to the drying speed, film formation and coverage. To ensure an optimal process, the unit controls the seed temperature. It also features a special rotating movement that helps achieve an equal and even seed coating. It is also worth mentioning that to increase the success rate of seeds coating, it is highly recommended that the seeds go through a <a href="https://making.com/equipment/seeds-blowing-machine-for-separation/">seed cleaning process</a> beforehand.

Moreover, the air humidity and temperature of the airflow created during the dressing process are adjustable, enabling operators to regulate and control the entire process. Since it’s a closed system, it’s also suitable for insecticides and fungicides applications.

The RDC 800 boasts a window and lighting in the cover, so you can control the process visually as well. Its modular design further makes it easy to clean, while its nickel-plated coating chamber protects it from excessive wear. The nickel-plating helps even more than stainless steel to protect the machine from corrosion.

Lastly, the RDC-800 has a capacity between 20 and 52 litres of seed per batch and is ideal for vegetable, grains, and flower seeds for large scale operations. Users can pack the output as soon as they are discharged.

Oil rape seeds attract much attention for their nutritional properties. Not only from food manufacturers but from pests too. Aphids, beetles, moths, and a host of other insects all want a piece of the grower’s multiplication plot.

Seed protection treatments are formulated to repel attacks without harming non-target ecosystem elements.

However, variations in treatments mean wastage and discrepancies in the weight of consignments. More worryingly, they affect the growth cycle of rapeseed, leading to inconsistent harvesting.


<h3>Coating to a perfect fit</h3>
Willem van Dok from Seed Processing Holland says that the treatment must cover 100% of the surface of the oil rape seeds. “The objective of growers is to obtain the highest yield for oil pressing, so exposed parts invite infestations and viruses.”

So the challenge is applying this treatment to a lot containing hundreds of seeds. “The main question for seed processing,” Willem notes, “Is how to coat every individual seed uniformly.” This becomes particularly tricky when working with treatments with a high liquid ratio.

But Seed Processing Holland doesn’t just pose the questions; it provides answers too. Willem explains how coating technology achieves homogeneous treatment at high speed.
<h3>Leave no seed unturned</h3>
Seeds are discharged in a rotary coating system and dried with dehumidified warm air. Simultaneously, the treatment mixture is pumped onto a spinning disc at the center of the system, distributing the coating evenly on the seeds as they revolve. During the seed treatment application, the seeds are dried and, when ready, discharged.

“We have pre-programmed this complex operation specifically for oilrape seeds,” says Willem, a solution to ensure homogeneity between lots and across batches.

A well-layered coating gives oilrape seeds their best chance to grow into seedlings. A fresh plot of foundation seeds is an open invitation to a banquet for pests, but precise treatment application closes the kitchen to them.
