Sugar beet seeds drying Equipment

Industrial drying machines are designed to remove moisture from your product. But the drying process must cater to variations in the state of matter and molecular structure of the input material. Industrial dryer technology exploits the modes of heat transfer (convection, conduction, radiation, evaporative cooling) to control the moisture content.

Drying

Extracting sugar from beets became popular in continental Europe during the Napoleonic Wars due to the British blockades of cane sugar. This is thanks to the high sugar content derived from this crop. Also known by its scientific name, "beta vulgaris", The beets’ popularity steadily rose afterwards and today, 20% of all sugar in the world comes from beets. But all of this can't be possible without its seeds. The production and processing of sugar beet seeds includes different steps such as cleaning, priming, pelleting and coating.

The solid-liquid separation is effected discontinuously in a sequence of specific process steps. The individual process steps last from a few minutes to several hours depending on the characteristics of the product.

Seed coating, also known as seed dressing, refers to the covering of seeds with external fluids, biologicals, chemicals, dry powder and solutions to protect the seeds, enhance germination and improve immunity. A common challenge for this process is that these materials may spill. Thus, in order to optimize the treatment process, it is essential to use equipment such as a seed coating machine that will reduce the workers' exposure.

Designed by Seed Processing Holland , the RDC’s (800 – 500 and 300) are advanced high speed seed film coaters with an integrated dryer. It simultaneously coats and dries agricultural and vegetable seeds, applying a higher percentage of liquid to allow direct packaging of the seeds once the process is completed. Furthermore, this seed coating machine uses a high-grade film coating formula and pays special attention to the drying speed, film formation and coverage. To ensure an optimal process, the unit controls the seed temperature. It also features a special rotating movement that helps achieve an equal and even seed coating. It is also worth mentioning that to increase the success rate of seeds coating, it is highly recommended that the seeds go through a <a href="https://making.com/equipment/seeds-blowing-machine-for-separation/">seed cleaning process</a> beforehand.

Moreover, the air humidity and temperature of the airflow created during the dressing process are adjustable, enabling operators to regulate and control the entire process. Since it’s a closed system, it’s also suitable for insecticides and fungicides applications.

The RDC 800 boasts a window and lighting in the cover, so you can control the process visually as well. Its modular design further makes it easy to clean, while its nickel-plated coating chamber protects it from excessive wear. The nickel-plating helps even more than stainless steel to protect the machine from corrosion.

Lastly, the RDC-800 has a capacity between 20 and 52 litres of seed per batch and is ideal for vegetable, grains, and flower seeds for large scale operations. Users can pack the output as soon as they are discharged.

Seed Coating Machine With Integrated Dryer

Seeds that are harvested are dried as part of their initial process of cleaning. Having huge quantities of seeds for drying in a single batch may take more time when done in ambient conditions since factors for drying involve the speed, temperature, and humidity of the air. The seeds can be dried under the desired conditions by controlling these factors, using a system that provides a more environmental-friendly operation.

The DBM-SP02 Conditioned Seed Box Dryer from Seed Processing Holland is a seed drying system that controls a closed environment's speed, temperature, and humidity. These are controlled via a touchscreen control display. The system consists of wooden boxes with mesh bottoms; these boxes are placed in cells and can be stacked or placed next to another cell. This allows the system to accommodate around 16,000 kg of seeds or around 800 m³ of plants in 400 pcs of drying boxes. Drying containers are also available in different sizes and the system can dehumidify at a rate of around 100 liters per hour depending on the desired temperature and humidity phase during the process. Dehumidification of the system is also available in different capacities.

The machine uses a heat pump installation whose design allows it to save 25 to 50% of energy, delivering an efficient drying process. More heat pumps can be added, depending on the volume of seeds to be treated. Moreover, the central heat pump system recovers surplus energy from one drying process and re-uses it in the following one. This operation accelerates the drying speed while also granting energy and cost savings.

Conditioned Box Dryer

Large-volume vegetable and field crop seeds manufacturers may prefer a fully automated coating and drying process, which provides better integration of these production steps and easy operation of the system. An advanced system that combines the coating and drying processes of seeds allows the products to be ready for packaging as soon as they come out of the unit.


<h2>Coating and drying of seeds in a fully automated unit</h2>
The FDM-4200 Rotary Dryer Coater from Seed Processing Holland is a fully automatic system that encompasses both the coating and drying process of vegetable and field crop seeds. The process starts with seeds fed from the hopper while the operator sets the recipe from a touchscreen panel. Then, the seeds are fed to the coating chamber with a spinning disc fitted at the center. This spinning disc rotates at a variable speed while dosing the coating liquid to the seeds, according to the preset mixture. Then the seeds are simultaneously dried inside using dehumidified and heated air. The temperature of the airflow can also be set and regulated during the entire process. The output seeds are then allowed to cool on a cooling screen and get ready for packing.

The system also allows simultaneous or sequential pumping of coating liquids for multiple layer applications. The whole process is done in a closed environment, independent from ambient conditions, making it suitable for fungicide and pesticide applications.

Rotary Seed Dryer Coater

Traditional dryers and heat transfer systems, like belt-, drum- or bed dryers are versatile solutions used in various applications, from sawdust to sludge. One of their main advantages is the low initial investment cost. On the other hand, however, traditional drying technologies, such as hot air drying, are high maintenance, energy–intensive, and relatively slow processes that require a lot of additional expensive equipment, like air treatment or firefighting.


<h3>Reduce drying time and energy consumption with superheated steam drying</h3>
The ExergyPSSD® uses superheated steam as the drying and conveying medium in a fully closed-loop process that operates under pressure. Treated with superheated steam in a low-pressure environment, the wet product is quickly dried off.

The superheated steam serves as a transport gas and drying media and vaporizes the moisture in the product in only 15 seconds. This essentially means that the moisture is efficiently evaporated using steam.  The dried product and superheated steam are separated in a cyclone and the steam is recirculated and reheated. Some of the excess steam is discharged through a pressure control valve to maintain constant pressure in the dryer, which can be recovered and recycled as an energy, heating, or evaporating source used in other processes for example.

The dryer is indirectly heated which means that it is tailored to be integrated with whatever heat source is available- steam, hot water, thermal oil, engine exhaust, electricity, or flue gas to name a few.

Large volume seed producers require high-capacity grading equipment to separate the good seeds from the bad ones at a desired rate of production. The grading equipment must also be suitable for different kinds of seeds to have a wider product application.


<h2>Grading seeds through a moving inclined belt</h2>
The CRM-4400 Seed Belt Grader from Seed Processing Holland is a system that separates the good seeds from damaged or irregularly shaped seeds and other impurities. It is applicable for different kinds of seeds such as sugar beet, cabbage, radish, spinach, and others. The system is equipped with an inlet hopper, a vibrating feeder, and three moving belts. As the seeds are fed to the inlet hopper, they go to the vibrating feeder where they are fed to the belts mounted horizontally with an inclination. The good seeds roll down the inclination and into a container; the irregularly shaped ones are conveyed by the belt to a separate container.

The system features an adjustable speed for the feeder and belt. The inclination of the belt can also be adjusted between 10 to 23 degrees to find the right angle for separation. Belts are available in white smooth type for seeds like cabbage and radish, or in black rubber type for seeds like lambs’ lettuce and beet for better visibility of the seeds’ quality. There is an optional transportable bag support for seed collection.

Seed Belt Grader

In large-scale production, separating quality seeds from empty seeds and other debris - such as stones and soil - requires a high-capacity separator. The separator must effectively collect quality seeds based on the seeds’ specific weight. This method allows the separation of empty seeds, as they are lighter in weight and the separation of stones on the heavier side.

The CGM-4600 Seed Gravity Separator from Seed Processing Holland is a system that separates seeds and other debris according to weight, using gravity. The seeds are fed into the hopper and then go to the feeder, which controls the number of products going to the deck. The deck is inclined and supplied with air underneath to make the seeds hover a little while shaking it. The shaking movement allows the lighter seeds to separate from the heavier ones.

The system has a total of seven outlets and is provided with three dividing plates for the user to decide how many separations are needed. The deck comes standard covered with a cotton cloth and has the option to easily change it for a different cover material such as stainless-steel mesh. Other adjustments in the system include deck inclination, shaking movement, and air pressure.

When pelleting large batches of seeds like flower, vegetable, or agricultural types, it is important for manufacturers to achieve uniformity of product size and shape. Through accurate dosage of coating elements and proper movement during the coating process, pellet products of consistent size and shape can be achieved.

The PRM-4210 Rotary Pelleting Machine from Seed Processing Holland is a system that coats seeds to produce pellets. The process starts with feeding the seeds into a weighing bin from two vibratory feeders –one for course dosage, and the other for fine dosage, until it reaches the desired weight. Then it is fed into the pelleting chamber where it is constantly rotated, with the use of a rotor. In the meantime, a preset amount of liquid and coating powder is dosed automatically until the desired pellet size is achieved. The 3-dimensional movement of the seeds from constant rotation allows for a good build-up of the pellets.

The system features a high-pressure fan where the air is blown under the rotor to avoid clogging between the rotor and chamber wall. The speed of the rotor can also be adjusted by the operator. The system is equipped with a transparent plastic hatch cover with a grip for easy visibility. Seed calibration and drying processes can be added optionally.

Although the construction of the sugar beet seed is impressive, he tells us, it is not flawless. “Seeds need some help to germinate and grow into new plants.”


<h3>Nature plays its part</h3>
High in sucrose content, the root of the sugar beet is a crucial ingredient in the production of foods and feeds. And its seed is the engine of the plant. The embryo is enclosed in a rugged shell, and germination kicks off after contact with water and oxygen.

But nature designed sugar beet seedlings to pop a surprise. Seeds, in general, are uneven in shape and size, but sugar beets are especially irregular. Some are empty, while others are laden with so much cork that they can’t germinate.

<a href="https://making.com/sugar-beet-seeds">Quality sugar beet seeds</a> must satisfy a minimum germination rate of 95%. “The secret is removing as much of the pericarp as possible without damaging the seed,” says van Dok.
<h3>Engineering plays its part</h3>
The rest of the process is driven by precision engineering. The seed is primed by steeping it in water using accurate weighing systems. This pre-germination stage washes out the hormones that hinder growth and activates the embryo from its state of dormancy.

Seeds are then ready for pelleting. The clay-like mixture of water, glue, and powders gives the seeds a homogeneous shape and size, usually between 3.5mm and 4.0mm.

Another critical step is drying, which van Dok says typically causes a bottleneck in processing. While water uptake is done in minutes, moisture release takes several hours and must be performed in regulated sequences. Finally, the pelleted seeds are coated with a layer of plant protection products (PPP).
