Twin-screw extruder for pharmaceutical formulations

In pharmaceutical R&D and production, efficient and scalable processes are essential for timely product development. Challenges often arise with batch processes involving extensive optimization times, high costs, and the use of significant quantities of active pharmaceutical ingredients (APIs).

Enable continuous hot melt extrusion and wet granulation

The Pharma 16 Twin-Screw Extruder is designed for pilot-scale continuous processing in the pharmaceutical industry. It can seamlessly switch between hot melt extrusion (HME) and twin-screw granulation (TSG), making it versatile for different formulation needs. The extruder operates within a speed range of 10 to 1000 rpm and supports throughput capacities from 0.5 to 5 kg/h for HME and 1 to 15 kg/h for TSG. It features 7 barrel zones with precise temperature control between 10 to 300°C for HME and 10 to 100°C for TSG. The equipment also allows for easy integration with upstream and downstream processing units due to its plug-and-play setup. The 40:1 length-to-diameter ratio and minimal use of expensive APIs and excipients make it highly efficient for early-stage development and scalable to larger production extruders from Thermo Scientific. The extruder is suitable for companies aiming to streamline their drug formulation processes.
