The Sleeve Applicator ULISSE is a machine designed by Scaligera to apply shrink sleeve labels onto different containers. The machine is suitable to cover many different types of containers such as tin, can, PET or glass bottles, plastic or glass jars, cups, kegs or even products or containers that have a special and irregular form. These labels are used in a wide variety of industries such as beverage, food, home and personal care, cosmetics, pharmaceutical and chemical.

The shrink sleeve labels are fed in the machine by reels in the form of a continuous tape. The number of reels will depend on the capacity of the machine. The ULISSE offers different models that can have one or several reels. A roller system called ‘dancer’ will keep the film under tension as it moves towards the rotary cutting head. The head is fitted with rotary blades that cut the tape forming the sleeves. According to the capacity, the ULISSE can be provided with one cutting head (20.000-22.000 bph) or two cutting heads (30.000-55.0000 bph). Meanwhile, the containers are conveyed one by one under the rotary cutting head by a single or double screw. Screws are the most used separators for conveying the containers, but based on product features, you can also opt for side motorized belts (for unstable products). When the sleeve is formed, it is slipped over the container in a loose way. Using a steam or hot air tunnel, the sleeve shrinks due to the heat or steam obtaining the shape of container, fitting properly.

Creating one seamless continuous roll between two different reels (splicing process) is always manual, except when there are 4 or 6 reels to connect. In that case, splicing can be automatic. The capacity of ULISSE varies depending on the model. Production speed ranges from 2.000 up to 55.000 bph.

Shrinking wrappers on a container using steam

The TVPSE is a steam tunnel designed by Scaligera to shrink sleeves uniformly around containers when they are exposed to steam. The shape and size of the container and the sleeve you want to apply are conditions in choosing the right shrink tunnel. Among all different types of the shrink tunnels, the steam tunnel is the most used, as it is suitable for most sleeve-label applications. Specifically, it is great for full sleeve application. Given the flexibility and thus countless varieties in sleeves is it a great solution for all kind of industries, such as for example the cosmetic, food, beverage, pharmaceutical or chemical industry.

After loosely applying a sleeve on a container with a sleeve applicator, the shrinking process begins. Containers are moved down the conveyor into the shrink tunnel that uses steam as the selected source of heat for shrinking the sleeve on the container. The steam tunnel is provided with one to ten chambers according to the production speed and type of products. In each chamber there are regulation and distribution cells which serve to distribute the steam to the exact point where you want to shrink the sleeve. This regulation step makes the steam process very precise. For faster format changes, the TVPSE can be fitted with optional external devices. These devices allow the cells to be adjusted from the outside without having to open the chambers.

The TAL is a hot air tunnel designed by Scaligera that uniformly shrinks sleeves around containers while exposed to hot air. The shape and size of the container and the sleeve you want to apply are conditions in choosing the right shrink tunnel.

After loosely applying a sleeve on a container with a sleeve applicator, the shrinking process begins, and containers are moved on the conveyor into the shrink tunnel. Hot air is injected by a heater and blown onto the sleeve that covers the container. The hot air shrinks the sleeve which adheres evenly to the container and takes its shape. The numbers of heaters can vary from two to ten. Furthermore, they can be manually adjusted in height and inclination according to your needs.

Add a tamper evident applicator head with minimal disruption to an existing line

The Karlville Startec machine consists of an applicator head integrated inside an existing labeller frame with a non stop reel feeder to keep the labeller running when a change of roll is required.
Drive is taken from the exit star wheel of the labeller, thus no conveyor is required and the equipment has no footprint on the line.
