An important goal of heat processing in the manufacturing of milk beverages is to achieve a long shelf-life and commercial sterility. Optimizing this process to get products of high quality and with a long shelf-life can be challenging. A processing system dedicated to medium to large-scale producers can be helpful in producing high-quality and shelf-stable milk beverages, at an optimum level of output.

Autoclave continuous retort system loads filled bottles in tube carriers

The autoclave ACBV series of Hydrolock, for glass bottles and jars, and the ACB series for PP, HDPE, and glass bottles are continuous retort systems designed for sterilization of milk beverages, evaporated milk, soups, and vegetables. Filled bottles are loaded into tube carriers, free of rotation. A chain pulls the tube carriers and rotates them while also rotating the products inside in a continuous motion. This rotation permits the application of a short-time, high-temperature sterilization, with efficient cooling.

This continuous agitation also preserves the organoleptic qualities of the products for you. Each product goes through the same thermal process. The products are transferred to a water-cooling unit inside the autoclave that cools them to avoid thermal shock. After the product leaves the cooling unit, it goes through a similar process in the atmospheric cooling unit outside the autoclave.

The Hydrolock ACBV series has a pre-heating device used for energy recycling. The hot water coming from the cooling process is used for preheating the products. This device is also necessary to avoid the thermal stress of the glass packagings. It combines with the continuous agitation of the product to allow for the shortest heat treatment possible. Saving you 35% more on energy consumption.

The autoclave ACBV and ACB series can run different sizes and shapes. The series is designed for both medium and large-scale production. The series carrier assembly is removable for safe inspection and cleaning. The ACBV series has a production capacity of 4000 bottles per hour to 26000 bottles per hour. While the ACB series has a capacity of 4000 bottles per hour to 28000 bottles per hour.

Pre-made pouches can be problematic for traditional cam-driven mechanical HFS machines. This is because the grippers may not be able to exert enough pressure to hold pouches in place where a traditional walking beam is used, or to exert enough clamping force during a retort process. This can lead to higher rejection rates. A fully servo-controlled carousel system can offer perfect results while increasing throughput and reducing downtime associated with maintenance.

Reliable, High Speed filling of pre-made pouches

The Bossar BCS series of servo-controlled machines has been specifically engineered to offer improved accuracy when using ready-made pouches. Unique Bossar-designed clamps hold the pouches perfectly in place during the filling system, ensuring a perfect seal.

Empty pouches are loaded into a carousel cassette system that ensures the machine receives a constant supply of pouches, and that can be topped up manually at any time.

The carousel system means that far fewer moving mechanical parts are needed compared to traditional cam-driven machines. This reduces maintenance to a minimum as well as the downtime associated with repairs or parts replacement.

Offering a range of formats, the BCS series can fill pre-made pouches up to 300mm x 400mm and volumes up to 6,000cc. Product throughput of up to 120 pouches per minute is available.

Flexibility is ensured by an all-electronic format change procedure. Simply using the touch screen interface, an operator can initiate an automatic format change with a single press that will take just a few minutes, and without any manual input required.

Sealing and cooking products in cans, pouches or other containers is a very popular method of preserving flavour and extending shelf life for a wide range of products. From baby meals to dairy products, convenience foods to pet products, pressure cooking is the most efficient method. However, traditional autoclave solutions can be limited to a single container type. They can also promote inefficient thermal transfer when used with non-traditional containers, risking cold-spots or burning. A water-immersion solution removes these risks while allowing a wide range of container types to be processed.

Full water immersion retort with rotation for processing your food products in cans, jars and pouches

The Automat and Rotomat series of full water immersion retort from DFT Technology has been designed to enhance product quality, increase production flexibility and ensure the highest levels of food safety.

Designed to handle a range of modern packaging solutions, including pouches and flexible containers, the Automat/Rotomat range completely covers the containers in a water bath. This not only provides exceptionally even heat transfer but can also guarantee 100% oxygen-free processing.

Utilising high-efficiency heat exchangers and an energy storage system, the Automat/Rotomat series reaches the set temperature very quickly, ensuring that the necessary lethality effect (or F-Value) is achieved as quickly as possible.

The Rotomat series adds the benefit of rotary motion. This accelerates heat transfer to the coolest part of any container – particularly useful for products of high viscosity. Process times are therefore reduced even further, preserving nutritional content and product quality.

To increase efficiency further, a wide range of loading and unloading systems are available. Options include manual packing supports and semi-automatic and automatic batch loading and unloading systems.

Aluminium-lined pouches and plastic containers are becoming the preferred packaging choice for many ready meals, meat products and other food lines. Traditional autoclaves designed for rigid containers are very inefficient when used with modern flexible packaging. They can also be entirely inappropriate for products which require only pasteurisation. A dedicated steam and water jet autoclave designed for modern flexible packaging can considerably reduce energy costs, as well as shortening process times and improving product quality.

Steam Water spray retort designed specifically for food items in flexible packaging

The Autovap and Rotovap lines from DFT Technology have been specifically designed for the optimal processing of foods in flexible packaging. This product line’s emphasis is on reducing steam and water consumption while increasing product shelf life.

DFT’s system injects steam which is blended with fine water droplets. This results in a highly homogenous heat transfer environment within the unit, reducing processing time and increasing product quality.

Fine sprays are also used during the cooling phase, and these enter the chamber from the sides as well as above, ensuring an even and rapid cooling. This design means that even comparatively flat containers can be cooled safely and efficiently.

Rotation of the product-holding cages accelerates heat delivery to cool spots within the containers. This can reduce the processing time and increase product quality and nutritional value. Rotation is particularly suitable for the efficient processing of very viscous products.

The Autovap and Rotovap machines can be supplied with a range of batch handling solutions, from manually operated packing supports to semi-automatic and fully automatic batch loading and unloading systems.
