Processing equipment used in industries regulated by GMP must ensure fully-sterile environments and complete CIP systems. This includes filtration units which should reliably separate solids from liquids while keeping them fully enclosed to avoid environmental contamination or operator contact. A self-cleaning hygienic filtration system is necessary to comply with strict regulatory requirements.

Separating solids from liquids using a self-cleaning candle filter

The STERIBAC, from Dr. Mueller, is a fully enclosed hygienic filtration system explicitly designed for industries where GMP must be followed. The system features a fully automated filtration process from filtering of liquids, washing of filter elements, and discharge of solid residues. During filtration, the fluid goes into a pressured chamber where the solids are collected on the outer surface of the filter medium while the filtrate passes through. Then, the filtrate goes into the perforated tubes before going up to a single central tube on the way out of the chamber. The collected solids are washed and dried before subjecting them to a reverse flow gas pressure shock wherein the filter medium expands, and the solids crack and fall to the discharge port.

The system also features patented heel volume filtration, where the unfiltered fluid at the bottom of the chamber is pumped back to the top and sprayed evenly to maximize the recovery of solids and liquids. Another feature is a patented spray washing system that effectively washes the internals of the filter system while using less washing liquid, which saves costs in every washing cycle. There are no mechanical moving parts and agitating devices in the chamber, which helps make CIP a straightforward procedure. The simple modular construction of the filtration elements allows variation in size, volume, and cake thickness in a closed system.

Separating solids from liquids by filtration requires frequent cleaning or replacement of the filter medium during maintenance to keep an optimum volume flow rate and effective separation. By using a self-cleaning filter unit that can effectively remove solids from the filter medium, maintenance is kept to a minimum, and the operating life of the filter is prolonged.

Dry and remove solids in filter media using rapid counter-current flow and pressure

The FUNDABAC, from Dr. Mueller, is a self-cleaning filtration system for various industrial applications such as chemicals, minerals, and pharmaceuticals. The system is equipped with a cloverleaf-shaped candle filter element where the solids from the process fluid are collected on the surface of the filter medium and form a cake. The filter element consists of six outer tubes and a central tube. The filtrate goes downwards through the six external tubes before rising through the central tube and out of the filter.

The system has a patented heel volume filtration where the remaining unfiltered fluids at the bottom of the vessel are pumped back to the top. From there, they are sprayed evenly inside the vessel through a nozzle while applying pressure to ensure maximum filtration. The system also features cake washing after filtration, spraying a wash liquid on the filter element.

Cakes around the filter media can be dried by forcing gas through the heel volume filtration until the remaining liquid is displaced. Removing the dried cake can be done by using pressurized gas such as steam or nitrogen in the reverse process flow, or counter-current flow, of filtration. This allows the filter medium to expand and the cakes to crack and fall when the maximum deflection of the filter medium is reached. The cakes can be collected at the bottom flange of the vessel. All these self-cleaning features are done within the closed filter vessel, lessening the chance of contamination.

Filtering and demineralizing water using reverse osmosis

A Due has several solutions for a complete water treatment system. Starting with the preliminary treatment, A Due provides a filtration system utilizing self-cleaning filters and/or sand filters and/or carbon filters, as well as cartridge filters. Apart from these, A Due offers an ultrafiltration solution called EASY.UF. EASY.UF is a fully automatic pressure-driven separation process and an ultrafiltration system that removes suspended solids, colloids, and most bacteria. This process is used before the water undergoes further treatment, such as reverse osmosis.

For further and final treatment, EASY.RO designed by A Due provides demineralization of the water through reverse osmosis. The reverse osmosis can remove more than 90 percent of the dissolved contaminants such as lead, mercury, or calcium.

A Due also provides disinfection processes through water chlorination, UV lamps, or by using EASY.Ozone. EASY.Ozone is a standalone unit that uses ozone dosage for water disinfection to eliminate a wide variety of microbiological agents.

Glycerol or glycerin is the major by-product generated in the biodiesel production process. But the disposal of glycerin or various other by-products coming from biodiesel production process pose a big challenge to industrial plants, as they can’t be disposed into the environment.

Distilling and refining glycerin while minimizing the environmental impact

Glycerin production plant designed by Andreotti Impianti produces technical and pharmaceutical glycerin from a wide range of natural feedstocks. Glycerin can be produced from different by-products coming from three industrial processes: methylesters production, fats saponification and fat splitting. The production steps change depending on the starting by-product.

For by-products such as sweet water (splitting) and spent lyes (saponification), the process path involves chemical treatment, concentration and glycerin distillation and refining. Hydrochloric acid is added in the treatment unit to reduce the solubility of fatty acids, which are then separated. Before moving on distillation process, only one filtration is carried out for sweet water, while for spent lyes, filtration is done twice, before and after the neutralization. Crude glycerin is further processed in the distillation, deodorizing and bleaching plant. The distillation system is composed of several steps: washing, rectification, condensation. In the last purification step, blenching section uses activated carbon to remove color and odor in order to obtain a pure glycerin.

It is worth mentioning that crude glycerin coming from biodiesel (methylesters) production can be sent directly to the distillation process without any further treatments, thus avoiding dilution, purification, and concentration steps.

Since one of the biggest problems caused by industrial plants today is the disposal of by-products, Andreotti Impianti has included in its plants stripping units, which help minimize the environmental impact.
